Commercial Photographer - Seagram Pearce

Your business name:
I just trade under SPP or Seagram Pearce Photography

Tell us a bit about your business:
We operate from Gardens in Cape Town CBD. Specialising in automotive & portraiture in advertising and editorial sectors.

How long have you worked as a photographer?
I started working as a full time photographer in 2008.

Do you feel it was an instant success or did it take a while to find its feet?
Absolutely nothing is an instant success except death. It took me a couple years to find my feet & get going properly with clients & business.

If any, what kind of jobs did you have before your career took off?
I was a graphic designer straight out of high school, so I did that for 2 years first.

Do you feel that you chose your "passion," or did it choose you?
It found me eventually. I always had ties to photography since I was 6 years old, but I never figured it out that photography was a career choice.

What made you decide to follow a creative career choice (though possibly risky) rather than something more stable?
My one & only boss I’ve ever had in my life (graphic design position) once told me, “you’re too ambitious for this. You’re need to go create your own empire, not stay here & help me create mine.” That was followed by a choice to either resign or get fired. So that decision to follow a creative career was ‘helped’ on a tiny bit.

Have you ever doubted your talent? If so, how did you work through your doubt?
I’ve never doubted by talent, but I have doubted if I made the right career choice. This again was not a reflection of my own ambition or talents, but that I was living in a region of the world were artists do not retain copyright to their own works & thus negatively effects income potential.

What is your favorite accomplishment?
I’m so fortunate to get to work on some really amazing projects, so its difficult to pinpoint a favorite. Getting to work with different international creative teams & ad agencies around the globe is always amazing for me & each one is a small accomplishment.

Tell us about any workshops you may offer:
I do workshops with Nikon whenever I can. Often its linked to portraiture or lighting specifically.

What is your favourite lens and why?
I’m all about versatility, so probably the 24-70mm is my favorite.

For post processing - What Tech tools do you use to get your job done?
Photoshop is a standard for everyone I think. My workflow is: CaptureOne > Photoshop. And a Wacom is essential too.

Are you working on any out of the ordinary projects at the moment?
This month I’m working on a project for a British TV Broadcaster. We’re shooting the promotional material for the TV series. I can’t say much more unfortunately, but it’s a cool project to be a part of.

What is playing in your CD player/iPod right now?
My usual mix of music which varies from Lana Del Rey to The Weeknd to G-Eazy to Eminem. I’m a mixed bag of tastes.

What’s your favourite ’90s jam?
Smashing Pumpkins

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
If I’m in my Land Rover Defender, I zone out & think about what a beautiful world it is. If I’m on my motorbike, I think about the next corner.

What were you like in high school?
Pretty much exactly what I’m like today, just with more life experience to not care about what people think about me.

Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your high school self?
Keep doing what you’re doing, just don’t take everything so personally.
