Commercial Photographer - Ben Bergh

Your name:
Ben Bergh

Your business name:
Ben Bergh Photography

Tell us a bit about your business:
I’m a Commercial Photographer living in Jhb covering a broad spectrum of genres, including: Advertising, Portrait, Industrial, Architecture and Product photography.

How long have you worked as a photographer?
13 years

Do you feel it was an instant success or did it take a while to find its feet?
Definitely took a while. Learning and honing skills in various genres, building contacts and client base – its an ongoing process even now. There’s always room to improve, innovate and meet or find new clients.

If any, what kind of jobs did you have before your career took off?
I worked in an ad agency for 11 years designing and shooting photos for ads.

Do you feel that you chose your "passion," or did it choose you?
I had always gravitated towards photography, experimenting with skate photography for many years before i started looking into the more commercial avenues.

What made you decide to follow a creative career choice (though possibly risky) rather than something more stable?
Everything else that i had tried made me miserable and somehow i knew i wasn’t where i needed to be. It wasn’t optional for me. I had to make it work as i didn’t want to do anything else.

Have you ever doubted your talent? If so, how did you work through your doubt?
You have to push yourself and believe in yourself – although i’ve learnt that talent isn’t everything. Some have more talent than others – it doesn’t matter. Don’t let lack of natural talent discourage you. Just fight hard enough to realise what you want from life.

What is your favourite accomplishment?
There’s not really any one accomplishment that stand out. One of the greats though would be shooting my first skateboard magazine cover back in the day.

Tell us about any workshops you may offer:
Nothing on the cards right now. Check in on my FB page though. May look at something a bit later in the year.`

What is your favourite lens and why?
My Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 is likely my most used lens. Apart from the obvious sharpness and consistent focus, its a focal length that i use on Advertising shoots, Industrial shoots, Archtictural shoots – and especially portrait shoots. A workhorse and money maker.

Are you working on any out of the ordinary projects at the moment?
Clients are generally fairly quiet in the very early part of the year – but looking forward to some interesting advertising shoots this year.

What is playing in your CD player/iPod right now?
Wild Eastern Arches

What’s your favourite ’90s song?
Big Country – Thirteen Valleys

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
No one thing. Whatever the dealings of the specific day are.

What were you like in high school?
An anarchist. Stood against rules and organised society the way we know it.

Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your high school self?
Go straight into photography and stop buggering around with design or other forms of work that weren’t really for me. The earlier you get into the right trade the sooner you’ll be up to speed with what you need to do in order to make it work for you.
