Fashion & Swimwear Photographer: Marc Berman
Your name: Marc Berman
Your business name:
Marc Berman Photography
Tell us a bit about your business:
I am a Cape Town based photographer, I started out as a party / festival photographer. Moved into Fashion, Swimwear, Weddings, Portrait and lifestyle photography. (Pretty much anything and everything I can get my hands on, I love testing myself with new projects )
How long have you worked as a photographer?
I Bought my first camera about 6 years ago ( 2013 ), though only considered it a profession once I got my first international gig (2 years ago 2017, I was flown to Germany to shoot a wedding) where the client paid for everything.
Do you feel it was an instant success or did it take a while to find its feet?
I wouldn’t say instant success, but it did kick off a lot faster than I was expecting. Over the years I just learnt more and more, I have surely worked hard and put in the hours to get to where I am now. It was tough but with photography you are always constantly learning. In the event / Festival scene I established my name very fast and just grew from there. How ever it has taken many years to get to where I am today - I’ve worked really hard.
If any, what kind of jobs did you have before your career took off?
I worked with events / parties and festivals on a very big scale I used to promote for clubs almost all over Cape Town, I was a youth development coach at old mutual soccer academy. I had a small shuttle service company, worked with children parties as an entertainer ( Fire performer ) , I’ve done a whole load of stuff, haha.
Do you feel that you chose your "passion”, or did it choose you?
I struggle with answering this question as I get asked it quite a lot. As soon as I bought my camera I fell in love with taking photos. being able to take a photo of a specific moment in time and making it last forever. The more I took photos the more I loved it, I was just lucky that people also liked my photos and decided to start paying me ID say the passion has just grown more and more over time.
What made you decide to follow a creative career choice (though possibly risky) rather than something more stable?
I do have a fall back plan if this ever had to crash and burn. How ever my personality and the person I am, I’ll never let it fail, I work too hard. I’m not the kind of person that gives up and I truly love taking photos, so I’ll always find a way to make it work. I chose to stick with it as I just started to fall in love with taking photos.
Have you ever doubted your talent? If so, how did you work through your doubt?
I have many times, I have had the question of “Is photography enough” - This question plays on my mind a lot, but like I said before I always find a way to make it work. The best way to work through it if you doubting yourself is to, look back at your favorite images you have taken, and try just remember the feeling those photos gave you when you took them. I can remember almost every image I have taken ( I have taken hundreds of thousands photos ) every time I look back at the images I remember the way I felt when I took the photo and how happy I was when I got that specific image, that moment in time. ( not sure if everyone gets this but I do, makes me proud sometimes ) it keeps pushing me.
What is your favourite accomplishment?
This is a tough one - I’ve had some amazing things happen but then to get messed around, for example having my photos published on billboards , magazine covers , marketing usage - Now these are all proud moments and accomplishments, however the brands related actually ended up messing me around, no credit given / no payment , I could continue this and speak about it for ages but prefer not. On a personal level I was probably most proud of the billboard / several Magazine covers. I did enter a photography competition during my 3rd year shooting, ( entered just for fun ) I ended up placing 2nd.
What is your favourite lens and why?
Currently I am obsessed with Canon 85mm f1.4, iv started using it quite a lot for portrait/ weddings and pretty much everything, it is exceptionally sharp, focuses fast, its just a fantastic prime lens for portrait photography. Otherwise my 24 - 70 F2.8 Mark II is also my most used lens, Covers a good range of wideness and great depth of field.
Are you working on any out of the ordinary projects at the moment?
I started doing a ballet series last year. One in town, one in the forest. I was thinking of continuing the series and doing a 3rd, I was thinking of doing an underwater ballet. Still need to figure everything out though..

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
It’s either what am I going to eat next or I’m always thinking of new photo ideas, My brain literally never turns off and I see the world differently.
What were you like in high school?
I was exceptionally rebellious kid in middle school. But I found as soon as i hit high school I grew up. How ever in high school I think I was pretty much the typical teenager where sports ruled my life,
Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your high school self?
Stop being a little shit and actually do homework and learn something. I wasn’t what you would call an academic student. My life was sports and being active.
