Commercial Photographer - Christof van der Walt
Your name: Christof van der Walt
Your business name: Walt Photography
Tell us a bit about your business:
I’m a Commercial & Advertising Photographer based in South Africa with special interest in Portraiture
How long have you worked as a photographer?
I was the school newspaper photographer so since 1997
Do you feel it was an instant success or did it take a while to find its feet?
I’m still working hard at it, and trying to reinvent what I do and how I do it.
If any, what kind of jobs did you have before your career took off?
It still doesn’t feel like my “career took off” Its 100% effort 100% of the time and it continues as I’m typing this :)
Do you feel that you chose your "passion," or did it choose you?
It chose me, but it took me a while to accept it. I never found anything to capture my attention as thoroughly as lighting & composition.
What made you decide to follow a creative career choice (though possibly risky) rather than something more stable?
It was my only interest, I had to take a shot at it and hope for the best!
Have you ever doubted your talent? If so, how did you work through your doubt?
The more I learn, the more I realise how little I know. I doubt myself on a regular basis, but continue to compare the work I am doing to what I’ve done and where I can improve and strive to do better on the next job.
What is your favourite accomplishment?
(Don’t ask me how) but that I managed to put my family first even though freelancing takes everything you’ve got.
Tell us about any workshops you may offer:
I’ve never offered workshops although I use assistants that I trust and know what I need.
What is your favourite lens and why?
My favourite lens is my Hasselblad HCD 28mm, I even bought an adaptor to fit it to my Fuji GFX kit. I love a bit of low wide angle and I can fit allot of environment into my portrait shot.
Are you working on any out of the ordinary projects at the moment?
I’ve started a portraiture project photographing Centenarians, ( people that have turned 100) it’s much more difficult than I expected emotionally but it will be worth the effort :)
JUST FOR FUN
What is playing in your CD player/iPod right now?
Nick Cave “Skeleton Tree” is on repeat at the moment.
What’s your favourite ’90s song?
“Crash into Me” by Dave Matthews Band
What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
What were you like in high school?
I used to whistle in my head all the time,
Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your high school self?
Don’t Panic, everything will be fine!
